What is involved with a re-wire of a house?

Firstly ask the question why do you want to re-wire your house?

Over time the electrical wiring inside a house will deterioate with age and usage. A cable manufacturer may state that the life of the electrical cable is 25 years but that is with them testing it 24 hours by 7 days at full load. So typically a house with wiring that is 30 years plus may need re-wiring.

What are the steps involved ?

Firstly find a registered electrician and ask them to carry out a site survey. This should be a free service where they will audit the house for existing sockets/lights/switches, discuss any additions & what you are likely to do in the future. For example, does the kitchen need to be re-wired if you are planning on changing it in the next few months & will have new sockets etc at that time.

Next review the written estimate that has been sent to you & check it has what you asked for. Also check that the electrician really is registered with one of the five organisations by looking at the registration companies website eg Does the estimate include issuing an electrical installation certificate & a completion certificate (this notifies the local building control office to comply with building regulations). Does the work include moving furniture, relaying carpets, will any holes chased into the walls be repaired.

Next, ask the electrician for some customer testimonials or even a reference call to check with their existing customers that they did do a good job.

If you are happy with all of these points then discuss possible dates & work plan

Remember that a full re-wire is very disruptive as carpets need to be lifted, furniture moved, floorboards lifted, walls chased and  it is recommended that the customer does not occupy the property during the work.

Wokingham Customer -refurbishment

Our project was a bungalow conversion with complete re-wiring to accommodate the new internal layout. Our architecst had provied a lighting and power layout which CPJ Electrics used for quotation purposes. Their quote was very competitive. The project kept to this budget with a few trade offs and variations here and there and suggestions by CPJ Electrics to improve the lighting and power locations. One of the suggestions in particular to use state of the art lighting panels we are particularly pleased with. The work has been carried out thoroughly, to a very high standard, and on time. With so many trades coming together at the same time there was inevitably some frustrations but these were managed with a smile and a sense of humour. I have no hesitation in using these guys again and recommending CPJ Electrics to anyone.

Excellent service, reasonable and competitive rate but more importantly a thorough job executed per job spec; left house in excellent order considering we had place re-wired; minimal disruption, house left clean and tidy. Will use again and do not hesitate to recommend.

Reading Customer

We required a number of power-points to be fitted in our new house along with the necessary electrical testing. Chris was very quick to assess our needs and provide a quote. He explained everything very clearly and didn’t try to sell us more than we required. He turned up when he said he would and was methodical in the work he did. I would highly recommend CPJ Electrics to anyone else needing electrical work.

Twyford Customer – re-wire

We were delighted with the service we received from Chris and his team. Chris was always honest, reliable, happy to answer lots of stupid questions, and consistently offered a high standard of customer service. We would always use him for our electrical requirements in future, and would not hesitate to recommend him.
